Download your transactions
- Sign in to online banking on a computer. A downloaded file is easiest to save and import from there.
- Open the account. Select the card or bank account you want.
- Find the download. In Capital One Canada's online banking, choose View Account, then More Account Services > Documents and Downloads > Download transactions. In the US, look for Download transactions in the account's menu.
- Choose a format and dates. Pick the dates since your last import.
Capital One Canada offers CSV, QIF, QFX (for Quicken), QBO (for QuickBooks) and OFX.
- Take QFX or OFX. Amounts have the standard signs, and each transaction carries an ID, so a file that overlaps your last one adds nothing twice.
- QIF and CSV work too. QIF has no IDs, so repeats are recognized by date, payee and amount. A CSV needs columns UrBudget recognizes; see below.
- Skip QBO. It's made for QuickBooks, and UrBudget doesn't open .qbo files.
- Use a budget in Canadian dollars for a Canadian card. UrBudget won't import an OFX or QFX file whose stated currency differs from the budget's.
No download? Use a statement
Your statements are in online banking too (View statements, in Canada). Save one as a PDF and let the assistant read it. If a statement covers more than one account, such as checking and savings together, tell the assistant which account's rows you want, and import each account into its own account in UrBudget.
Bring it into UrBudget
A QFX or OFX file needs no settings. For a CSV or QIF file, set Dates in the file to the order it uses, and import a Canadian card into a budget in Canadian dollars. Then choose Import file on your Capital One account and check the preview; the import guide has every step, and what the assistant sends to your AI provider when it reads a statement.
If something looks wrong
- "File currency CAD differs from USD." The Canadian card's file is in Canadian dollars and the budget isn't. Import it into a budget that uses CAD.
- Purchases show up as money coming in. The CSV writes purchases as positive amounts. Tick Purchases are positive (UrBudget 1.0.3 and later) and preview again, or import the QFX or OFX file instead.
- No download on your US account. Use a statement PDF and the assistant, as above.
