UrBudget is an envelope budgeting app for Windows and macOS. You give every dollar you have a category, and the budget stays in a file on your own computer instead of on someone else's server.
Start with what's in your accounts and give all of it a category: rent, groceries, the car insurance that's due in March. Spending comes out of its category. If you overspend somewhere, move money over from another one, and whatever is left carries into next month.
Targets for weekly, monthly and yearly bills, or for an amount by a date.
Credit card spending moves money into the card's payment category, so the bill is covered when it comes.
Quick assign fills underfunded categories or repeats last month, and shows the changes before applying them.
Transactions
Click a row in the register and type. Payees remember their last category, and amount fields do arithmetic, so 42.10+8 works.
Transfers and split transactions are edited in the row.
Search with filters such as payee:, amount:>100 or is:cleared.
Select many rows to categorize, approve or clear them together.
Reports
Twelve of them, from spending by category to net worth and a forecast of your balances. Each one filters by date, account and category, and exports to CSV.
All twelve: Spending by category, Spending by payee, Spending over time, Spending calendar, Income vs. expense, Income breakdown, Money in and out, Net worth, Balance sheet, Balance over time, Forecast, Cash age.
Scheduled transactions and loans
Enter your paycheck, rent and subscriptions once. UrBudget adds them when they're due and leaves them unapproved until you've looked at them, and upcoming bills count toward what their category needs.
The loan planner shows the amortization schedule, what an extra payment saves, and the payment it takes to finish by a given date.
Importing
Coming from YNAB, you can import its export file (no token needed) or connect to its API. UrBudget recalculates every month and lists anything that doesn't match YNAB's totals.
Bank statements come in as CSV, OFX, QFX or QIF files. You see each row before it's added, duplicates are skipped, and rows that match transactions you already entered are paired with them.
Assistant
An optional helper. Attach a statement and ask it to add the transactions, or ask it to cover an overspent category. It proposes the change, and nothing happens until you apply it. Applied changes can be undone.
It runs on your ChatGPT Plus or Pro plan, or on your own OpenAI or Anthropic API key, and only what you ask about is sent.
Privacy
Each budget is a SQLite file in the app's data folder. UrBudget works offline, needs no account, and keeps automatic backups. Nothing leaves your computer unless you turn on sync or use the assistant.
This website doesn't use analytics, ads or trackers.
Sync
For $2 a month, sync keeps your budgets the same on all your computers. Each computer encrypts a budget with your passphrase before uploading it (Argon2id and XChaCha20-Poly1305), so the server only holds data it can't read.
If you forget the passphrase, your budgets are still on your computers: reset sync and upload them again. Turn on sync

Questions
What happens when the trial ends?
UrBudget opens read-only. You can open, read and export every budget, but not change it. Adding a license unlocks it again.
Can I use one license on several computers?
Yes, on all of your own computers. Enter the same key in Settings → License on each one.
Do I need sync to use two computers?
No. You can export a budget on one computer and import it on the other. Sync does that for you, continuously.
Does it connect to my bank?
No. Download a statement file from your bank's website and import it.
Which systems does it run on?
Windows 10 and 11 (64-bit) and macOS 12 or later. There's no phone or web version.
Where is my data stored?
In %APPDATA%\com.localbudget.desktop on Windows and ~/Library/Application Support/com.localbudget.desktop on macOS. Each budget is its own SQLite file, with its backups next to it.
