Bank sync with SimpleFIN

Bring transactions from supported US and Canadian banks into UrBudget. Press Sync, review what arrived, then save. Available in desktop version 1.0.4 and later, with a separate SimpleFIN subscription.

Check your bank before subscribing

SimpleFIN supports selected US and Canadian institutions. Search for your bank and the right account type in SimpleFIN's institution directory before paying. Support can change, and an international bank's US or Canadian service does not mean its accounts in other countries work.

The integration is included in UrBudget, including its trial. The connection service is sold separately by SimpleFIN: its listed price on October 19, 2026 is $1.50 a month or $15 a year, plus applicable tax. Check SimpleFIN's current pricing before subscribing. UrBudget's license is $9 once after the 30-day trial; it does not include the SimpleFIN subscription.

You can use either service without the other, or neither. Bank file import and manual entry need no bank connection or provider subscription.

Set up your connection

  1. Update UrBudget. Use version 1.0.4 or later on Windows or Mac. The direct installers have the latest published release; Microsoft Store updates may arrive later after certification.
  2. Add your accounts to your budget. Create the checking, savings or credit-card accounts you want to fill. Their currency must match the budget's currency.
  3. Connect at SimpleFIN. Create your subscription, add your bank through SimpleFIN's connection flow, and make a setup token for UrBudget. Start from SimpleFIN Bridge, or use Open SimpleFIN Bridge in the app.
  4. Paste the setup token. In UrBudget, open Settings & data → Import → Bank sync. Paste the token and choose Connect. Each token works once; make a new one for another computer.
  5. Choose where each account goes. Under Syncs into, select the corresponding UrBudget account. Leave any accounts you do not want as Don't sync. Set Since to the first date you want to import.

Keep the opening balance consistent with your first import. For a fresh start with today's balance, skip transactions already included in that balance. To import older history, set the opening balance to the balance immediately before the first transaction you will import. Otherwise the same spending can be counted twice.

Sync, review, save

Press Sync in the account register or Bank sync settings. UrBudget fetches posted transactions, shows potential duplicates and matches, and applies your payee rules. Check the account, dates, signs and categories; choose which rows to add, match or skip before saving.

This is an on-demand import, not a continuous or real-time bank feed. Pending transactions are excluded. How recently the provider refreshed your bank and how much history is available depend on the institution. Pressing Sync again does not force your bank to supply newer data.

A sync uses a request for each account; a first import of older history can take several requests. UrBudget limits requests to 20 per day on this computer and shows the count in Bank sync settings. If you reach it, continue the next day. Other apps connected to SimpleFIN can also use its service allowance.

Your connection and your budget

Your bank authorization happens through SimpleFIN and its connection provider. UrBudget does not ask for your bank password. It stores the resulting access credential in Windows Credential Manager or macOS Keychain, outside your budget file, backups and exports. Transactions fetched from SimpleFIN are saved to your local budget only when you apply the review.

If you enable device sync, imported transactions are part of the encrypted budget it syncs. The bank credential is not shared between computers: connect each computer separately with a fresh setup token. Account links travel with the budget, so check they match the accounts your new connection exposes.

Read the UrBudget bank sync privacy details and SimpleFIN's security information before connecting.

If something does not look right

  • Your bank is missing. Check the institution directory and SimpleFIN's connection status. Use CSV, OFX, QFX or QIF import if your institution is unsupported.
  • A setup token does not work. It may already have been used. Generate a new token for this computer; do not paste your bank password or share the token.
  • The connection needs attention. Follow the message in the app. Check a payment issue at SimpleFIN; if access was revoked, make a fresh setup token and reconnect.
  • Transactions are missing. Check the Since date, whether the transactions have posted, and whether SimpleFIN has refreshed the account. Older history may need a statement-file import.
  • Purchases appear as money coming in. Check the review before saving. For a credit card, enable Purchases arrive as money in in Bank sync settings if your provider reverses the signs.
  • The balance differs. Check the opening balance and import dates, skipped or duplicated rows, pending transactions, and whether you selected the right account. An account in a different currency cannot sync into this budget.

Disconnecting

Removing the connection in Bank sync settings forgets this computer's access credential and unlinks the open budget's accounts. Transactions you already imported stay. To stop the provider connection or its charges, also remove the bank or cancel your subscription at SimpleFIN; disconnecting UrBudget does not cancel it for you.
