First, save your budget
Do this while your subscription is still running. Once it ends, YNAB doesn't let you open your plans, and its API stops answering too, so neither of the ways below works until you pay again.
- Export it. In YNAB on the web, click your plan's name and choose Export Plan. You get your categories, monthly amounts and every transaction as spreadsheet files, without targets, notes or scheduled transactions. What the export holds.
- Copy it into the app you're moving to. Apps that read YNAB's API with a personal access token can take everything, including targets, notes and scheduled transactions. UrBudget does this in one click and checks every month against YNAB's totals. How the import works.
If you have more than one plan, save each one.
Check how you subscribed
Where you cancel depends on who bills you. Open YNAB on the web and go to Account Settings: the Subscription section shows it. If you subscribed in the iPhone or iPad app, Apple bills you; in the Android app, Google does. Otherwise it's YNAB.
Cancel on the web
For a subscription you bought from YNAB directly.
- Open YNAB in a browser. Billing isn't in YNAB's phone apps. On a phone, open app.ynab.com/settings in your browser instead.
- Go to Account Settings. Click your plan's name at the top of the left sidebar, then Account Settings.
- Cancel. Scroll down, click Cancel Subscription and confirm. You won't be charged again.
You can also email help@ynab.com from the address on your YNAB account and ask them to cancel it for you.
Cancel through Apple
For a subscription started in YNAB's iPhone or iPad app.
- Open Settings on your iPhone or iPad. Tap your name, then Subscriptions.
- Choose YNAB. Tap Cancel Subscription. If there's no Cancel button, or you see an expiration message in red, it's already canceled.
In YNAB's app, Account Settings also has a link to manage the subscription with Apple. Deleting your YNAB account doesn't cancel an Apple subscription, so cancel it with Apple first.
Cancel through Google Play
For a subscription started in YNAB's Android app.
- Open the Play Store. Tap your profile picture, then Payments & subscriptions, then Subscriptions.
- Choose YNAB. Tap Cancel subscription and follow the steps.
Uninstalling the app doesn't cancel the subscription. Deleting your YNAB account does cancel a Google Play subscription.
What happens to your budget
- Until the paid period ends, nothing changes. You can still use YNAB, and you can resume the subscription if you change your mind.
- When it ends, you lose access to your plans. YNAB's pages describe no read-only mode: if you sign in, you'll need to subscribe again to see your budget.
- Your data is kept for a while. Canceling doesn't delete anything. YNAB's privacy policy says it keeps most account data for up to 24 months after a subscription expires, and YNAB says it will remind you before the data is deleted. Subscribe again within that time and your plans come back.
- Deleting your account is different. You can delete it yourself in Account Settings, and a deleted account can't be restored. An account that only ever had a trial is deleted 120 days after the trial ends.
Refunds
- Bought from YNAB: canceling takes effect at the end of the billing period you've paid for. YNAB's cancellation policy says it doesn't give retroactive refunds, discounts or extensions based on how much you used it or on service problems, including Direct Import outages. If you have a question about a charge, email help@ynab.com.
- In the UK, Switzerland or the EEA, you may have more rights, including a 14-day cooling-off period when you subscribe or resubscribe.
- Through Apple: Apple's refund rules apply. Request one from Apple at reportaproblem.apple.com: choose Request a refund, then the YNAB subscription. Apple says to allow 24 to 48 hours for an answer.
- Through Google Play: YNAB's help center says to request a refund from Google within 48 hours of subscribing, and that a Google Play trial turns into a paid subscription automatically.
- Gift subscriptions can't be refunded once they've been redeemed. Unredeemed ones can go back to the original payment method.
If price is the reason
If you like YNAB but the monthly charge adds up, the yearly plan is $109 instead of $179.88 a year, and one subscription can be shared with up to five other people. YNAB's prices in full.
If you'd rather stop paying for a subscription at all, UrBudget uses the same envelope method on Windows and macOS for $9 once. Import your YNAB budget with a token before your subscription ends, try UrBudget alongside YNAB for a while, then cancel.
